Patterns Imprinted on Stars

from A Man Could Get Tired and Other Songs by Ryan Sutter

/

about

Just about the perfect summary of my non-theistic spirituality, written as an imaginary dialog between my mother and I.

Recorded in 2007 for RPM Challenge, previously released on the Trumpet Marine album "Louder, Longer, Lobster".

lyrics

he said "I've come to believe in resurrection,
but you'll never resurrect yourself
it's not so simple as peace or introspection
it's more a leap into the people who'll help"

and she said, "faith, what about faith?
don't you need a savior?
don't you need an Aslan?
don't you need a God?"

he said, "I'm sorry but I think you've missed
the essence of the message
there is nothing 'bout life or death
that isn't odd
though we're alone
we're never alone
and we have always been
yes we have always been
we're patterns imprinted on stars
and we'll never come
again"
