about

July is a tough month for me. As a kid it was my favorite. School's out, life is good, playing sports, climbing trees. Now it's just horribly hot and I spend most of the month trying not to think about the fact that my brother died on the 4th of July in 2005. This song captures both sides of that coin. Stylistically, it's intended to be a bit of a nod to the Psychedelic Furs and The Mountain Goats. This almost ended up with alternate title "Fast as Buildings".

Recorded as part of the 2012 RPM Challenge and previously released on the album "Blood and Scotch/Valentine".

lyrics

this isn't an apple tree
it's a building that we jump off when we are stuntmen
this isn't a branch you see
it's the bridge of the starship Enterprise and we're crewmen
the sun is up and the grass is high
there isn't a cloud in the whole damn sky

that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July

hiding out with the bees I ask
when she finds me will she kiss me or will she kill me?
I'm a ten year old Superman
strong as bullets, jumping train cars, fast as buildings
I touch her hand and she blinks her eyes
I'm never again gonna feel this high

that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July
that's why I hate July
